Chapman Shum celebrates his 14th birthday today. Chapman has rare genetic disorder. He was born blind and has speech and learning difficulties.
At the age of five, after visiting Disneyland, he taught himself to play “It’s a Small World” on a toy piano. At 11 he passed the Associate Board of the Royal Schools of Music examination Grade 8 – with distinction. He is now preparing for further examinations.
Chapman received the’ Spirit of Hong Kong’ Award in 2021 and the SENSE UK , Young Person of the Year in 2023. He has played for the Amber Trust, the TUC Congress, numerous charities and has featured on TV.
The family want to provide encouragement for everyone in the NHS and particularly for those who have to cope with serious health problems. Today Chapman is supporting the Friends of the Royal London Hospital Music Project which aims to demonstrate that ‘When Words Fail Music speaks’.
