SMILE (Reboot Boogaloo)
The SMILE project was created by the Hexjam Band & Core Music. It also features, George Hutton’s Amazing Drum Students, Music staff and students of St. Joseph’s R.C. Middle School Hexham and special guests the Baghdaddies. The SMILE project was filmed and recorded by participants during the 3rd UK lockdown (Dec – March 2020/21) and focuses on the themes of, smiling through adversity, supporting Arts and Culture and and promoting positive mental health via participation in music. The SMILE project was created in partnership with Core Music and the Northumberland Cultural Fund.
Core Music is delighted to present a brand new piece of art called SMILE. It is the brainchild of Paul Susans, bass player with world renowned band The Baghddies and a highly respected and experienced Community Music practitioner. Paul came up with the idea of SMILE as a result of the effect the Covid pandemic has had on the arts and music in particular. Producing music in adversity has occurred during many periods of history and has often resulted in very dynamic and vibrant pieces. Berlin in the 1930s, Chicago in the 1920’s spring to mind and there are many more examples. SMILE is a reflection, in musical form, of the impact of Covid on the ability and opportunity for people to get together and create and play music.
